I'm considering reading this book but I would like to hear some opinions first. Do I have to know lots about the middle earth and lord of the rings lore to understand some of the stuff going on in the book? I've watched all 3 Lord of the Rings movies but I don't know much lore or story beyond those. Is the book better than the trilogy of the ring? (Fellowship, two towers, return of the king) Should I read this book? Has anyone read ';The Children of Hurin'; by J.R.R. Tolkien?
Hmmm...I haven't read it yet, but am considering picking it up since i just finished The Silmarilion.Has anyone read ';The Children of Hurin'; by J.R.R. Tolkien?
I would suggest reading The Silmarillion first (fills in all back story, lore)
I haven't read it, but considering that I loved the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion, I am sure I will like The Children of Hurin as well :D.

It's pretty much a compilation of The Children of Hurin shorts from the other books, Silmarillion, etc. with a few extras tossed in.
You don't actually need to know much lore to understand the story, maybe the bad guy, other than that, it's a separate story from others.
Wouldn't say that it's better than the LOTR Trilogy, but still worth it, it was a good read for me, but not great, considering that i've already read it countless times from other books, the story itself is rather dark and depressing.
It even has a appendix at the back of the book, like the Silmarilion, for reference if you get lost in the story.
Its a very good read[defenatly if ur a fan of Tolkien like me] its the expanded story of something from the simarillion i thinku dont need to know alot about the lore but having a basic knowledge of the age and Morgoth can help alot [ heres a good site http://www.douglas.eckhart.btinternet.co.uk/ ] and in my opinon not as good as the LotR trilodgy hope i helped
It's a work vastly inferior to any other of Tolkien's works, not so much because of its content but because of its shortness. It was never designed to be a book and is little more than an extended essay. It is not a novel at all, as if it were, Tolkien would've given far more specifics such as how he did in the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. It is a chapter of the Silmarillion essentially, and that is a book definitely worth reading, as much if not more than the Lord of the Rings, and that happens to be one of my favorite books of all time.
I want to, but first I need to finish five other books.
