Its all a matter of opinion though. I WOULD call it one of the best films of the year. And I would love to see it at least nominated for Best Picture - whether it wins, who knows. I really do think though that Heath Ledger should win best supporting actor. He is just superb in that film. It has nothing to do with his death. I agree that the Oscars make poor choices sometimes. Chicago winning over The Pianist - which took Actor, Director and Screenplay - is just a joke. Is the Dark Knight an Oscar contender?
Which films do you feel were better?
the dark knight does not deserve to be nominated for best picture. heath should take the acting nod though.

The English Patient over Fargo (1996)
Shakespear in Love over Saving Private Ryan (1999)
Crash over Good Night, Good Luck or Brokeback Mountain (2005)
I disagree with the Oscars so much in general that I really don't care about them at all. One thing that I don't understand, for example, is why virtually every movie that has a criminal protagonist wins an award. Any mob movie is basically a guaranteed nomination, at the very least.
Maybe. It was my favorite film so I wouldn't be disappointed if it won. I just don't really put much emphasis on awards shows when it comes to art you know?
i respectfully disagree with you that the dark knight wasnt the best movie of the year :Pi dont think it will win best pic, but i think it deserves best supporting actor for heath and NOT becouse hes dead. i think he trully deserves it, also best score and director
Hopefully, I really liked the movie.
Its all opinion, you call it hype but critic wise it is one of the higest rated films of the year, percent wise, even higher then Slumdog Millionaire. It has a higher rating then almost every film in the last 8 years to win the best picture award. So the film does have hype, but that wouldnt be the reason why they would think it is god enough to stand with the rest of the possible best picture noms. Any top ten list this year even have it in the top 5. There is more to The Dark Knight then hype, and because you personally dont find it the best pic of the year, doesnt mean thats why it might win. Critics actually really liked it, many even think it deserves to be in there top ten of the year, like No Country For Old Men, or The Departed probably every best picture winner was for their respect years..
I enjoyed The Dark Knight but I'm with film-guy on this one. I think hype may just decide the outcome but I don't believe it deserves to win best picture and I still don't think Ledger should win best supporting actor. His performance was more novel than brilliant.
We all know Robert Downey Jr should win best supporting actor.

Clever boy.
I don't really mind if The Dark Knight gets a Best Pic Nom or not. To me it was a fantastic film all around, and for it to win the Best Picture award would be great, although I need to see the list of the other nominees first.
dont question the film guy on movies of 08 that were great. he probably already watched so many movies we havent heard of that were probably a lot better than the dark knight.oh, and I wouldnt be surprised if they did fall for the hype.
I think, because of the hype surrounding it (not to mention its pure awesomeness), it's going to win quite a few. Look at Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Yeah, it was good, and it's my favorite, but it won mostly because of the hype.
Who decides who wins by the way? People like Roger Ebert or some random panel?
